Making sure babies and children are protected is an important job for parents.  An essential part of that is using organic products in their everyday lives.

Organic products are made from items that are free of dyes, chemicals and other additives that can be harmful to little people.  Pure and natural products are beneficial for everyone, but it's especially important for babies and children.  This is because their skin is thinner than adults and certain non-organic products can cause allergic reactions or other irritations.  Products made from all natural materials are safer for babies and children and the positive impact organic living has on them will make you not even want to consider a non-organic lifestyle once you've gone green with your children.

Since so many people are showing an interest in eco-friendly items for children and babies, many companies now offer everything from organic foods and clothing to bedding and toys.

Here are five examples of eco-friendly items for children and the benefits of each.  If you can't find these in your local grocery or department store, try searching for them on the internet.

1. Cotton Cloth Diapers- It's estimated that thousands of tons of disposable diapers are tossed into landfills each day and can take years to decompose.  Cotton cloth diapers benefit the environment in a variety of ways because they are chemical free, are less expensive and are reusable.

2. Clothes- Organic clothing is extremely beneficial for young, delicate skin.  Some are made with vegetable based dyes and cotton that is free of pesticides. When purchasing eco-friendly clothing, look for lables signifying they were made in the United States, Canada or Mexico.

Some examples of well-known environmentally friendly materials used in making clothing are hemp and bamboo.  "Hemp is what we used before we started using cotton," said Lisa Alexander.  Hemp is a drought resistant, durable weed grown primarily in Canada without the use of pesticides or herbicides.  It is one of the faster growing biomasses known and one of the earliest domesticated plants.

Bamboo grows primarily in China without the use of any fertilizers or pesticides.  In addition, bamboo is a fast growing, hardy plant that's been known to survive drought and flood conditions.  Bamboo plants release alot of oxygen into the air and reduce soil erosion.  Bamboo clothing is made with vegetable dyes and is 100 percent biodegradable.  In addition, it is a very soft and comfortable material, similar to silk or cashmere.

3. Bedding- For the complete organic bedding experience, purchase a mattress, blankets, pillows, sheets and a comforter.  Some organic materials used for bedding include wool, bamboo and cotton.  Studies have shown organic crib mattresses may help prevent allergies as well as SIDS in babies.

4. Food- Organic baby food offers a variety of health benefits, namely because it is free of preservatives and chemicals that can be harmful to gentle stomachs and digestive systems.  Organic foods also have higher nutritional levels than non-organic foods.  This is because organic farmers rely on crop rotation and other methods to produce healthier, richer soil.  One of the many benefits of crop rotation is that it helps provide nitrogen through legumes, which are a type of plant that aids in replenishing soil that has been depleted of oxygen.

5. Toys and Stuffed Animals-  All natural toys are made with organic cotton, natural wood and other environmentally friendly materials so your child will not be exposed to harsh pesticides or other harmful chemicals.
